Say It to Them, Not About Them

Scripture: Matthew 18:15

One of the greatest tests of spiritual maturity is where we take our frustration first.

Our culture makes it incredibly easy to go sideways:

• group chats

• subtle posts

• “prayer requests” that are really complaints

• venting to everyone except the person involved

But Jesus gave a clear pattern: go to your brother first.

Not second.

Not after polling friends.

First.

The First Word Principle protects both unity and integrity. It forces us to move toward clarity instead of assumption. It guards us from gossip disguised as concern.

A simple but powerful filter is this:

If you can’t say it to them, you shouldn’t say it about them.

Now, this doesn’t mean we never seek counsel. Wise input matters. But the heart posture should always be restoration, not validation.

Direct, humble conversation builds trust.

Sideways conversation slowly erodes it.

Today, consider: Is there someone I’ve talked about more than I’ve talked to?

Courageous love takes the harder path — but it’s always the healthier one.

Prayer:

Jesus, give me courage to speak directly and lovingly. Guard my mouth from gossip and my heart from assumption. Help me pursue clarity that builds trust. Amen.
