When the Bottom Falls Out

"Now Elimelek…died, and Naomi was left…" -- Ruth 1:3-5
The dream of survival in Moab quickly turns into a nightmare. Elimelek dies. Then both sons--Mahlon and Kilion--also die. Naomi is left with two foreign daughters-in-law and a broken heart. The woman who left to avoid famine now finds herself surrounded by graves.
What do you do when the place you thought would bring life only brings loss?
It's easy to feel abandoned in those seasons. But sometimes, God allows the bottom to fall out not to destroy us, but to awaken us. Moab didn't just fail Naomi--it revealed how far she had drifted. Pain, though never desired, has a way of shaking us free from compromise. It reminds us of what really matters. And it can become the very catalyst for return.
God does not waste grief. He doesn't abandon us in loss. Naomi's mourning becomes the soil where God will grow new life. Ruth's loyalty. Boaz's kindness. The lineage of King David. Even Jesus. All of it will flow from this moment of emptiness.
Your pain may feel final--but in God's hands, it's part of a greater redemption.
Reflection:
Where in my life has something fallen apart?
Could God be using loss or disappointment to lead me back to Him?
How can I trust that God is still present in the middle of brokenness?
Prayer:
God, I don't always understand why You allow certain losses, but I believe You are near to the brokenhearted. Use my pain--not to harden me, but to draw me close. I surrender what I cannot fix, and I trust You to redeem what feels hopeless. Meet me in Moab--and lead me home. Amen.
